Rare Calico Buck? Nope. Piebald Deer.

February 13, 2011 by · 1 Comment

There have been many chain e-mails going around about this buck, claiming that it is a calico deer even rarer than albino deer, and that the hunter tried to sell its hide for $13,000 to Cabela’s.

Well most of that myth has been debunked. We believe this deer was actually taken on a privately owned ranch in East Texas in 2008, and that no money exchanged hands with Cabela’s. The piebald deer scored 138 5/8 gross, and weighed in at 195 pounds.

What is a piebald deer? Piebald actually describes an animal that has large patch coloring. This genetic variation (much like albinism) can be found in horses, or whitetail deer, and it typically affects less than 1% of the population.
