Top 5 Degree Programs for Outdoorsmen

Degrees for OutdoorsmenWith graduation just around the corner for most college seniors, I thought it would be a good idea to write a blog about some majors that should be offered for the outdoors-type.

I mean, come on, who wants to learn about math, anyway? We all know 2+2=5. Just kidding, but check out the top 5 outdoor majors I recommend colleges add to their curricula!

  1. Bachelor of Science in Scouting - This is sometimes a lifetime feat. It’s taken me almost 10 years to learn what my dad has been trying to teach me all my life. If there was a college degree solely dedicated to scouting, it would be something I’d consider coming out of high school.
  2. Bachelors in Outdoor Television - We all love the Outdoor Channel. Why not create a major devoted to hunting and fishing television? I know a ton of people who would have skipped over the School of Hard Knocks and went to school to one day be a hunting personality on TV.
  3. Management of Game Cleaning - For us outdoor-type, a degree in game cleaning is something that could be used for the rest of our lives. For example, I’m in a class called History of Ohio. I really don’t think this is going to serve me well for the rest of my life like game cleaning will!
  4. Bachelor of Science in Taxidermy – For hunters and fishermen, taxidermy is a must. We’ve shot our fair share of trophies, and it would be nice to be able to do it ourselves. Now taxidermists do a great job, but I would love to be able to mount my deer and turkeys myself instead of spending $400-500.
  5. Science of Game Calls - This would be one of the coolest degrees ever. You’d end up being like Caeser on Dog Whisperer, only you would be able to talk to deer. That might come in handy during the rut! But watch out, that buck might come too close for comfort!

Well, those were the top five majors I’d like to see for the outdoor-type people in the world. Don’t forget to check out the CollegiateCamo decals! Make sure you order yours today!

Top Three Valentine’s Day Gifts for Outdoorsmen

January 23, 2011 by · 3 Comments

Written by Pro-Staff team member Brad Tansey

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, I don’t normally see this as a traditional holiday such as Christmas or Thanksgiving. To me, it’s a holiday dedicated to showing that special someone just how much he or she means to you.

That’s the sappy part of the holiday.

Now that’s out of the way, and it’s time for the good stuff. For the outdoorsman, Valentine’s Day is a great way to have some “opportunities” you might not have throughout the rest of the year.

If you and your significant other like to exchange gifts on Valentine’s Day, then check out these gifts you could ask for this Valentine’s Day.

1. Camouflage Lingerie

Camouflage LingerieI mean what guy wouldn’t like to see his wife or girlfriend in camouflage lingerie? It’s a great way to kick off Valentine’s Day the right way. Now, she may see this as a gift for you, but you must convince her that you did this from the heart. I’m not saying to be derogatory by any means, but say for example, my girlfriend wasn’t automatically excited about camouflage lingerie. But I think with some gentle convincing that I was thinking about her the entire time, she’ll be on board.

2. A New Gun or Bow

This can get a little pricey. But hey, remind your girl about the times you bought expensive jewelry or took her out to an expensive dinner. You could even take a page out of Jeff Foxworthy’s book and create a chart showing how much meat you contribute to the household through hunting, and that a new bow or gun could definitely improve the quality and quantity of that contribution in the long term.

3. New Hunting or Fishing Gear

Make sure you explain the fact that this is your passion, and you always have to have the best gear. It’s the time-trusted argument of “You always go shopping, so why can’t I go shopping?”

These three items are just a few ways to get your mind thinking Valentine’s Day. For you outdoorsmen, camo lingerie is definitely the way to go! I can’t wait to get my girlfriend’s ordered. Of course it’s a gift for me, but this is a gift for her, too.

(Oh, and take 10% off your camo lingerie order with promo code SEXY at checkout.)

The Outdoorsman’s Christmas List

What to buy your hunting man this holiday season? If you’re anything like me, shopping for the husband, brother, dad and grandfather seems impossible every year. The decisions are endless, and it can be confusing for ladies. Men usually won’t readily admit it, but they like receiving gifts just as much as women do.

But not just any gifts. Men love their shotguns, targets, game and camo almost as much as they love their special ladies. (But seriously, who doesn’t love all these things? I digress.) It is hard to surprise a man when you ask him what he would like for a gift and his response is, “A Remington 700 or XM2010 with a muzzleloader and corresponding optics, renew my Ducks Unlimited membership, some new shells, tokens to the car wash, some RealTree MAX-4 pants with scent-lock in 32X30 and a matching jacket, McDonald’s gift card, a new cleaning station, some Pabst Blue Ribbon, Maker’s Mark or Pendleton, and an exotic hunting trip to Africa. Oh, and a 3-D TV. So when I watch Neal Rohrbach on Outdoor Channel Outfitters show, it seems more realistic.”

Is he speaking Latin? Okay, maybe not that bad, but buying for your outdoorsy man can be difficult, and even pricey. You can consolidate your shopping list, save some hard-earned money and alleviate your worries at www.collegiatecamo.com. We want your significant other to like his present so much that we are even offering you a 20% off at our web store so you can knock out your holiday shopping fast and cheap. (You’re welcome.) Just enter CHRISTMASCAMO at checkout; the 20 percent discount will be applied automatically.

My Mom the Outdoorswoman

May 4, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you moms, especially those mothers who are outdoors enthusiasts. I’d like to share with all of you some information about my mom.

When I was growing up, my mom made sure that the outdoors was a huge part of my life. From bass fishing farm ponds in Missouri to chasing pheasants all across the Midwest, my mom was always right by my side teaching me all there is to know about the great outdoors, conservation and hunting and fishing.

She grew up on a small farm in Missouri and learned many outdoor skills from my grandfather, which she has graciously passed down to me. Not only did she teach me about hunting and fishing, but she also educated me about many more important things a kid can discover in the outdoors. Things I will never forget, like morel mushroom hunting, picking goose berries, and arrowhead hunting. She has helped me look at life differently by showing me all the little things in our daily lives in which we can find joy.

Not only is she an avid outdoorswoman, but also an animal lover and a conservationist.  I cannot count how many animals we had for pets growing up. Not just dogs and cats, either. Field mice, turtles, ducks, crawdads, and whatever else I brought home in my pockets. I remember the time she saw her first bobcat.  She was driving home and saw it out of her car window. She then proceeded to drive by that spot once a day for about a year to look for her furry friend.

In short, I am proud to have such a great person as my mom and am so grateful for everything she has taught me.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom.

Scary Statistics: Fewer Youths Hunting and Fishing

February 18, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

We recently read some disturbing numbers in the article from the Wall Street Journal, “The Outfitters’ Lament: Too Few Kids With Guns.” I was shaking my head with concern over the statistics about the youth of America and what they’re missing out on in the great outdoors.

What a shame that video games have taken away young people’s enjoyment of the outdoors and spending time in the outdoors, hunting, shooting and fishing. We see overweight children and are disgusted by their sedentary lifestyles. Many rural families for generation after generation have migrated to the cities leaving no one on the farm to foster these sports. If we’re not careful, there will not be enough generations left to even pass on the memories and life values learned in the field.

So many youth will grow into adults and never know the joy of sitting in a tree stand watching a squirrel approach within inches, or watching a river otter along a bank as you check out the “just right” fishing hole. I could go on and on with breathtaking memories spent hunting and fishing as a youth that I feel all young people should be encouraged to experience and enjoy.

Besides the valuable lifetime experience hunting provides, we are all aware of how massively outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen support conservation with the revenue from our hunting and fishing licenses. For those who don’t hunt and fish but enjoy the outdoors in other areas, conservation programs are in trouble without the support of this revenue!

This particular article speaks of the outdoor industry and how we’re all trying to curb this decline, but it’s going to take a “fad” of sorts to make it fun, acceptable and cool again. We need to fight for the cause and embrace what promotes these outdoor activities with pride.

CollegiateCamo is doing our part by combining the collegiate-loyal with the outdoors-proud. We show our passion for the outdoors, hunting and fishing by offering the community camouflage college decals and apparel.  Maybe what it takes is “hanging on to the coat tails of successful endeavors and combining the two to excite our youth about the outdoor sports.”

What are you doing to keeping hunting and fishing alive?

CollegiateCamo at Shot Show 2010 in Las Vegas!

January 14, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Our CollegiateCamo crew leaves Sunday for SHOT Show and we are really excited to see all of the new and exciting stuff in the world of hunting, shooting and the outdoors. This year SHOT Show is at the Sands Exhibition Center in Las Vegas from January 19 to 22.

It’s an especially fun year for CollegiateCamo since we are actually exhibiting this year in Booth #353! Yes! The first time we will represent the company to our friends in the retail business.  SHOT Show is an amazing trade show that is only open to people of the trade.  I’m sure we’ll see some of our friends who own stores that love our college camo decals and college camo apparel.

I’ve never seen so many miles of booths – it’s like a hunter’s dreamland for equipment, firearms, archery, outdoor apparel and accessories. I’ve heard that there are more than 18 miles of booths and all the outdoors goods and services are amazing! You have never seen so many outdoorsmen items in one place. SHOT Show attracts folks from all 50 states every year. It’s worth noting that SHOT show is sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. (Couldn’t do it without them.)

So we will drag six CollegiateCamo staff out to Vegas and we plan on having a blast! On Wednesday we will do a very exciting TV shoot for the Outdoors Channel.  We’ll be featured in a segment in February that shows new and exciting items available as seen at SHOT Show. So, we’re trying to “buff it up” in time to look great for the camera!

And aside from all the excitement at SHOT Show, did we mention parties galore? Yes, we’ve been invited to the Sportsman Channel shindig and we are ready to P-A-R-T-Y! They are great friends, especially our buddy Matt Blouin!

Jeanie and Marty (CollegiateCamo founder) will be seeing Ted Nugent and Love Pump in Vegas. We’ve even got feelers out to get in to Ted Nugent’s party, but that’s a tough one to crack. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.

Last, but certainly not least, our friend Jody Niccum – 2007 World Duck Calling Champion – will be with us on this trip. He will have autographed photos at our booth of him and his huge trophy. Come see us at SHOT Show in Booth #353 and let the fun begin!

Top 5 Drinks for Outdoorsmen

December 31, 2009 by · 2 Comments

Shotgun Shell ShotsTrue hunters, fishers and outdoorsmen who are passionate about their favorite university’s college sports are no stranger to tailgate parties and other occasions that call for a solid drink.

The CollegiateCamo family recently gathered to celebrate Christmas together, and in honor of our favorite activities – the great outdoors and college sports – we came up with our “Top 5 Drinks for Outdoorsmen” to share with the world! (Prepare yourself – there’s a lot of whiskey involved.)

Of course, the CollegiateCamo team wouldn’t be caught dead taking shots out of anything but shotgun shells. What are your favorite drinks for the great outdoorsman and college sports fan? Share your tips here!

1. Jägermeister

This German 70-proof herbal liqueur’s name literally translates to “hunt-master,” or more flexibly “gamekeeper” or “forest supervisor.” The logo is the head of a stag with a cross between its antlers – a reference to Saint Eustance, patron saint of hunting and trapping, and Saint Hubertus, patron saint of hunters. Introduced in 1935, this famous alcoholic beverage is well-known for its licorice-like flavor.

2. Buckshot (Shot)

1/3 Tequila Blanco
1/3 Jack Daniels
1/3 Bailey’s Irish Cream
Fresh Ground Black Pepper
Mix Jack Daniels and tequila in a shot glass, then slowly pour the Bailey’s on top. Sprinkle fresh ground black pepper. Shoot!

3. Shotgun (Shot)

1 oz. Jim Beam bourbon whiskey
1 oz. Jack Daniels Tennessee whiskey
1 oz Wild Turkey bourbon whiskey
Pour Jack Daniels and Jim Beam into shot glass, float Wild Turkey on top. Shoot!

4. Toasted Fisherman (Mixed Drink)

1/3 Crown Royal Canadian whiskey
1/3 Amaretto Almond Liqueur
1/3 Sweet & Sour Mix
1 splash 7-Up
Mix all ingredients over ice. Stir and serve with a cherry. Cast!

5. Deer Hunter (Mixed Drink)

2 oz. chilled Jagermeister
1 oz. vodka
3-5 oz. chilled root beer
1 squeeze of lemon
Pour Jagermeister and vodka over ice. Add root beer to taste, and polish it off with a squeeze of lemon. Ready, aim, fire!
