Fishing With Family and Friends in Cape Canaveral

Summer times almost gone! Woohooo!  Bring on Old Man Winter because the only thing I will miss is fishing, but I’m sure my mind will be too busy focusing on big game animals across the states! Well, I won’t really be missing out on fishing all that much because I live in the south and Old Man Winter rests here before and after tormenting the northern states but as long as he cools us off I’m good with that!

Fishing down here is always good! Too many species to target to not have good fishing! This summer I did a lot of fishing with my family, and friends! I mainly fished salt water and have realized what an addiction it is, because there is also the one fact of too many species to not commit to it! Where ya say was I fishing? The main salt water destination I chose was around Cape Canaveral Fl., in the Indian River and my targeted fish was…yep you figured right…Gator Trout!

I was lucky enough to be guided by my Uncle Travis who put me on more fish than we could keep! Nearly every time we went out, which was every Thursday afternoon, we limited out! It was a blast that will get and keep you addicted!! We also caught some red fish, ladyfish, salt water cats and saw a wide variety of other animals but the best treat was a Manatee! Man that’s one funky looking water beast!! Very cool to watch though! This type of fishing is one of the easiest there is; as a matter of fact it’s so easy even a caveman can do it! Please note this was not taken from the popular insurance commercial!! HAHA seriously though if you wanna take a kid fishing for the first time, you gotta take ‘em gator trout fishing! nMy youngest son went a few times and unfortunately I don’t have the pics of him with his catch but trust me when I say my 10 year old out fished me!!! Ya know I love the outdoors but when I get to spend it with my family that’s what makes the memories last! Good fishing and good Hunting and always remember to take a kid and always stress and teach safety!

God Bless… Gatorman OUT!

The Strength of Bonds with Hunting Buddies

As I arrived to my final destination in the Lone Star State in efforts to see my best friend and pursue some hogs I realized something. There is nothing like the bond with your hunting buddy. While I use the term hunting buddy loosely, it covers a great array of people including family, friends, peers, coworkers and even significant others. From a different point of view, when around people that you are not familiar with the interest in filling tags and harvesting animals can be either controversial or a great conversation starter. Those who hunt naturally gravitate towards each other because there is a certain comfort in knowing there’s a common interest between you and the stranger.

Lifelong Hunting BuddiesLoading up the pickup and driving to her family’s ranch in pursuit of feral hogs we took the opportunity to catch up on everything since we last saw each other and reminisced our past. Throughout the cackling session we also dug a little deeper and discussed politics, lessons learned and offered advice to one another. While we don’t always agree with each other, we respect each other enough to listen to the opposing side. We’ve always had a close friendship, but after years of shooting, hunting and other assorted adventures we realized that it has brought us closer and built a unique bond.

As we settled into our hunting spot waiting for signs of movement from the hogs, the time passed rather quickly. Memories flashed back to our first hunt with daddy, to our current endeavor and every hunting and fishing trip in between. These are moments that will never be forgotten. This all took place in spurts between stretches of silence, listening and waiting for the critters to show. By the end of my hunting trip with her I realized something else. Through the test of miles, silence, discussions, heat and everything else, our bond ensures that I have a lifetime hunting buddy and I wouldn’t trade her for the world.

Getting Ready for the Upcoming Hunting Season

One of the greatest experiences I had this summer was in August when I went to Langham Outdoors in Illinois to hang tree stands.

It might not sound like a ton of fun, but the TV show I’m on, Tree Stand Buddy’s Game On, will be going there during the rut in November to hunt for a week. I won’t be hunting, but I’ll be behind the camera waiting on that big ole buck to walk his road to glory. We hung nine sets, so there is a definite possibility someone will be killing a nice buck.

The guys went to Langham last year and only one person killed. This year, I know we will make it happen. As for myself this fall, I’ll be trying to fill my Ohio buck tag along with filming the rest of the guys from Team OI.

Check us out on the Pursuit Channel Sundays and Wednesdays at 5 p.m. and Tuesdays at 6 a.m.

Happy Hunting!

I Love Wyoming

Well it was a hot summer day in Laramie, WY. So a buddy of mine and I decided to take a little drive in my truck to scout for elk and test out the new Goodyear MTR tires I recently bought. So we decided to take a drive up to the Snowy Range and go look for elk. Well we got up there and started to run trails looking for elk, which were also trails use for Jeep runs and off-roading vehicles. Well, we didn’t end up getting a whole lot of scouting done, but we did a good job at breaking in my new tires! I love Wyoming.

“Mizzou Tiger Open” Benefit Shoot a Successful Fund Raiser

August 23, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

School is upon us, and it’s a great time to hit the shooting range. At Mizzou, the shooting team will have a few more dollars at its disposal to recruit new members to the University of Missouri Shooting Team.

The “Mizzou Tiger Open” Benefit Shoot was held July 30, 2011 was a huge success. Many local shooting sports fans came out to join in the fun of the Benefit Shoot, as well as one family that traveled from as far as Florida to attend!

The reunion with the 1971-72 Mizzou Shooting Team and the current team was a huge success. Only one member from the former shooting team lineup was unable to attend.

It was a scorching Missouri July with the temperature reaching the upper ’90s, but no one seemed to let the heat get them down.

CollegiateCamo’s own Pro Staffer Jenny Romanin traveled from Colorado to be a part of the event.  She was on that day, and placed 2nd in Sporting Clays in the 50 target division.

Two of the 1971-72 team members placed, too – Denny Spurling and Bill Fretwell. Oh yeah, they still have it!

The following talented shooters won awards at the Mizzou Tiger Open Benefit Shoot:

  1. CHAMPION Sporting Clays – Ralph Gates
  2. 1st Place Sporting Clays  50 Targets – Jon Doolittle
  3. 2nd Place SPorting Clays 50 Targets – Jenny Romanin
  4. 1st Place Sporting Clays 100 Targets – Garret Benskin
  5. 2nd Place Sporting Clays 100 Targets – Warren Pinson
  6. 1st Place American Trap – Denny Spurling
  7. 2nd Place American Trap – Bill Fretwell
Ryan Mason and Larry Houston did an amazing job of organizing the event and hope to do it again! Mizzou Shooting Team long-term goals include making the Benefit Shoot an annual event.

Congrats to all our winners and best of luck to the 2011-2012 Mizzou Shooting Team!

We never thought we would be so sad to see one of our decals on the news. View Fox 4 KC’s touching story about U.S. Army Specialist Spencer Duncan who tragically lost his life last week in Chinook helicopter incident in Afghanistan. We are so grateful for his service to this great country, and for his ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom and safety. Our hearts and prayers go out to the soldiers, their families, their friends and everyone whose lives he touched. Spencer Duncan attended school locally at Olathe South High School. We were so touched to see so much of the local community stand for Spc. Spencer Duncan at this memorial. What incredible friends and family he has. Thank you so much for sharing his story with the rest of the community.

Vacationing in Wyoming & Montana

This June I got the chance to spend 8 days in Wyoming. I started my journey in Jackson Hole for 4 days. Talk about a BEAUTIFUL town! I did lots of hiking in Jackson, but my favorite activity was horseback riding. The views were beautiful, as I was able to see 3 different mountain ranges from where I was riding. After the 4 days in Jackson Hole, WY, my family and I headed into Yellowstone National Park. Over the next 4 days, we stayed in various places throughout the park including cabins at Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, and Yellowstone Lake.

We also stayed one night at Chico Hot Springs in Montana. I cannot find the words to explain how extremely gorgeous the area is. It sounds silly, but there were times when I truly felt like one of the pioneers experiencing this rugged land for the first time. I saw more wildlife in the park than I have in my entire life (and I am an outdoorsy person). Topping the list were bison, pronghorns, moose, coyotes, marmots, elk, and bears. It was incredible how close the animals often were to the roads. I had my fair share of up-close encounters with several bison.

After my stay in Yellowstone, I have a new-found appreciation for the wilderness. I am so thankful that our country preserved that land for education and observation. There is so much to be learned in the wilderness! If you ever get the chance, please visit Yellowstone National Park. It seems weird, but it really gives you a sense of pride in your country and how many beautiful things it has to offer!

The Importance of Scouting, Part 2: Stolen Camera

July 21, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Written by CollegiateCamo Pro-Staffer Brad Tansey

Well, I’m writing this blog a little sooner than I’d like to. I went to check my trail camera Tuesday to find that it was stolen. I had it cable locked with a pad lock to boot. I guess the saying of a lock only keeps an honest man out rang true in my case. For someone to steal another man’s equipment is beyond me. People that do this shouldn’t be allowed to even step foot in the great outdoors. It’s people like that who give hunting a bad name in general!

I’ve seen my fair share of cameras in the woods. Not once has it ever come across my mind to steal it. That is someone’s hard-earned money. Last year, I noticed a fairly expensive camera near a stand I had. When I passed it, I thought in my mind “Hey that is a really good spot. I hope it doesn’t get stolen.” I hope that man had more luck with his camera than I did. I only had my camera for a week and a half. Needless to say, I’m not buying another. It’s appalling that this is what we as hunters and outdoorsmen have sunk to.

This is something that will probably only get worse. It makes me sick to my stomach to even think about it. My buddy has had three cameras stolen in the last four years. He even had someone cut down the tree it was mounted to because he had it enclosed in a welded steel box. Now that’s just wrong!

People that steal equipment or anything for that matter need to take a look at themselves in the mirror and realize what they are doing is dead WRONG. No wonder I can’t get hunting permission anywhere anymore. It’s because of morons (and I say morons because I shouldn’t type what I really think) like that disgrace the hunting industry.

Oh well. I’m done ranting. Maybe I’ll just start scouting harder. You know what? I’m going to chalk this up as a lesson learned. Now I’m going to kill an even bigger buck because I’ve got more drive to do it. Don’t worry, when (not if) I do, I’ll be sure to let you know all about it.
